What to Expect At Your Dental Appointment if You Haven’t Visited in A While

If you haven’t been to the dentist in a while, that’s okay. Sometimes life happens, and making regular appointments isn’t always easy. Your dentist shouldn’t judge you for needing a little extra help, even if your visit takes longer than it normally would.

Still feeling nervous about your upcoming appointment? No worries – this post will tell you what you can expect so you don’t have to “go in blind”!

Checking In

Checking in for your appointment shouldn’t be too different than the last time you visited. Just remember to update your dental insurance plan, contact info, home address, symptoms, or health history if necessary.

The Checkup

Almost every dental appointment starts with an oral exam. Your dentist will inspect your teeth, tongue, and gums per usual. Depending on exactly how long it’s been since you’ve had a checkup, they may also take X-rays of your mouth. If your dentist notices something concerning lying just out of sight, they’ll be sure to let you know and talk about your options.

The Cleaning

This is when you might start to feel the effects of excessive plaque buildup. A toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste can do a lot if you clean your teeth regularly at home, but it takes a professional to remove the more stubborn deposits. Your cleaning might take longer than it would otherwise, and your mouth could be more sensitive.

In this case, some discomfort and bleeding isn’t uncommon – though you should still let your hygienist know if you’re in pain. They may be able to help by applying a numbing gel or giving you periodic breaks.

Checking Out

When all is said and done, your dentist may give you some pointers on taking care of your teeth. That said, you shouldn’t necessarily expect a lecture! A good dentist wants to educate, not shame.

In fact, if you struggle with certain aspects of oral care, your dentist will likely have more personalized tips that can address your concerns. For example, if you avoid flossing because you hate the way it feels, they can recommend a gentle water flosser that’s more comfortable and just as effective.

From there, all that’s left to do is schedule your follow-up in six months and head home!
